Wildfire resilience
&
Green fire breaks.
Nature-based wildfire mitigation through vegetated firebreaks, erosion-control systems and post-fire landscape recovery strategies.
The Challenge
Wildfire risk is increasingly affecting landscapes across Europe. Fire can rapidly remove vegetation, expose soil and increase the risk of post-fire erosion, sediment movement and landscape degradation.
- Rapid loss of vegetative cover across large burn-scar areas
- Exposed soil left vulnerable to erosion in the first rains after a fire
- Sediment and ash movement into nearby watercourses
- The need for fast, large-scale revegetation on steep or difficult terrain
Our Solution
FloraVeld explores nature-based wildfire resilience through vegetated firebreaks, erosion-control systems and landscape recovery strategies developed as site-specific bioengineering systems. The objective is to create landscape interventions that support wildfire risk management while maintaining ecological function.
Where It Applies
- Green Firebreaks
- Vulnerable and Steep Slopes
- Post-Fire Erosion Control
- Difficult-Access Terrain

Technologies
Hydroseeding
A sprayed slurry of seed, mulch, fertiliser and water applied directly to bare or burned soil, forming a protective cover as it cures. Best suited to large or irregular areas where rapid, flexible coverage matters more than mechanical surface retention, and typically combined with matting in higher-risk areas.
Pre-Seeded Coir Systems
Open-weave coir mats custom-designed to establish vegetated protective zones.
Coir Erosion-Control Mats
Anchored, continuous protection of exposed post-fire soil. Coir is a preferred natural geotextile for this purpose, offering erosion-control performance comparable to commonly used straw mulch, with added durability and slope-retention advantages.
How It Works
Assess
Burn severity, slope and soil exposure mapped to prioritise the most vulnerable areas.
Stabilise
Erosion-control mats and pre-seeded coir systems laid over exposed soil before the first significant rainfall, secured at the crest, edges and overlaps to prevent water flowing beneath the mat.
Revegitate
Hydroseeding applied where rapid, large-scale cover is needed, particularly on steep or hard-to-access terrain; pre-seeded matting used where immediate, anchored protection is the priority.
Recover
As vegetation establishes, the site's natural firebreak and erosion resistance is restored, supported by a monitoring regime with prompt repair of any local failure.
Key Benefits
- Support for landscape-scale wildfire resilience through engineered, site-specific systems
- Erosion-control performance comparable to commonly used straw mulch, with the durability and anchorage advantages of a continuous coir cover
- Protection of exposed soil through the critical post-fire window
- Rapid, flexible vegetation establishment via hydroseeding, including on steep or difficult-access terrain
- Reduced risk of invasive species colonising bare burn-scar ground
- Support for ecological recovery using nature-based landscape management
